Background of the Study:
Hepatitis B is a viral infection that poses a significant health risk, particularly in regions with limited vaccination coverage. In Bauchi State, efforts to vaccinate the population against hepatitis B have been implemented as part of broader public health initiatives. However, despite these efforts, vaccination coverage remains suboptimal, leading to a sustained risk of infection and long-term complications such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (Chinedu, 2023). Vaccination is recognized as the most effective strategy for preventing hepatitis B, yet several barriers, including limited healthcare infrastructure, vaccine hesitancy, and logistical challenges, hinder widespread immunization in Bauchi State.

The coverage of hepatitis B vaccination is influenced by various factors, including socio-economic status, access to healthcare facilities, and the effectiveness of public health campaigns. Rural areas often experience lower coverage rates due to geographic isolation and inadequate healthcare services. In addition, cultural beliefs and misinformation about vaccines further contribute to hesitancy, reducing the overall immunization rate (Oluwaseun, 2024). The lack of comprehensive data on vaccination coverage also makes it difficult for policymakers to identify gaps and implement targeted interventions.

This study aims to evaluate the current state of hepatitis B vaccination coverage in Bauchi State by analyzing immunization records and surveying community members. It will examine factors affecting vaccine uptake and assess the impact of current public health campaigns on vaccination rates. The findings will provide valuable insights into the barriers to achieving optimal vaccination coverage and inform strategies to improve immunization efforts in the region (Fatima, 2025).

Statement of the Problem :
Despite the availability of a safe and effective hepatitis B vaccine, vaccination coverage in Bauchi State remains below the desired level. Low immunization rates leave large segments of the population vulnerable to hepatitis B infection, with significant long-term health and economic consequences. Contributing factors include limited access to healthcare facilities, especially in rural areas, vaccine hesitancy driven by cultural beliefs and misinformation, and logistical challenges in vaccine distribution (Ibrahim, 2023). The suboptimal coverage has resulted in continued transmission of hepatitis B and an increased burden on the healthcare system, as untreated infections can lead to severe liver disease.

Current public health initiatives have attempted to increase vaccination rates through outreach programs and community education. However, these efforts have not sufficiently addressed the underlying barriers, resulting in persistent gaps in coverage. The lack of comprehensive data on vaccination coverage further complicates efforts to design targeted interventions, as policymakers cannot accurately identify high-risk groups or areas with the greatest need for improvement (Umar, 2024).

This study seeks to systematically evaluate hepatitis B vaccination coverage in Bauchi State, identify the barriers to higher immunization rates, and propose evidence-based strategies to improve coverage. The goal is to reduce the incidence of hepatitis B infection and its associated health complications, ultimately contributing to improved public health outcomes in the region.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the current hepatitis B vaccination coverage in Bauchi State.
  • To identify the barriers affecting vaccination uptake.
  • To recommend strategies to improve vaccination rates.

Research Questions:

  • What is the current level of hepatitis B vaccination coverage in Bauchi State?
  • What factors hinder effective vaccine uptake among different population groups?
  • What measures can be implemented to enhance vaccination coverage?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Limited access to healthcare facilities is significantly associated with lower hepatitis B vaccination coverage.
  • H2: Vaccine hesitancy and misinformation contribute substantially to low immunization rates.
  • H3: Targeted public health interventions will significantly improve hepatitis B vaccination coverage.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study focuses on both urban and rural areas in Bauchi State. Limitations include potential inaccuracies in immunization records and challenges in reaching remote communities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Hepatitis B: A viral infection that affects the liver, potentially leading to serious conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
  • Vaccination Coverage: The proportion of a population that has received a specific vaccine.
  • Vaccine Hesitancy: Reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccination services.
